As illustrated by Alcoa's experience, keystone habits work and encourage organizational change in three significant ways:

Keystone

Keystone habits produce small wins at first – and those small wins invariably generate momentum for larger changes which come later on. Small wins establish patterns of success – or put another way small wins convert cumulative success into routines everyone can apply.

Keystone habits always encourage change – usually by creating structures which help people to thrive. For example, Alcoa's enhanced communication system for reporting worker injuries just happened to be helpful in enhancing market responsiveness as well. That's how keystone habits tend to work.

Keystone habits create a corresponding culture change as well – they create new cultures where better values become ingrained. Keystone habits make very clear the values that would otherwise be forgotten in times of stress, difficulty or adversity. “Small wins do not combine in a neat, linear, serial form, with each step being a demonstrable step closer to some predetermined goal. More common is the circumstance where small wins are scattered … like miniature experiments that test implicit theories about resistance and opportunity and uncover both resources and barriers that were invisible before the situation was stirred up.”

- Karl Weick, organizational psychologist
